New sources for fossil resources have the very important psychological effect that people do not believe in doomsday scenarios of a depletion of resources anymore. Now we dig 3km into the earth, later we can dig up to 30km and after that we go mining on the moon and mars. Climate change can't be stopped anyway so there is no need to change our behavior. But now a recent study shows the severe environmental impacts of mining for shale gas and oil.
